What is “Color Guard”?
Short Answer: Dancing with Props
Better Answer: Derived from ROTC, color guard is another form of dance/movement, usually contemporary ballet. A color guard performance can be a solo but is most commonly viewed as an ensemble, some larger than 50 performers. Each guard member is expected to dance with props: most typically flags, rifles, and sabers. There are two types of color guard: Drum Corps International (DCI), where the color guard is a subsection performing in stadiums alongside an ensemble of musicians; and Winter Guard International (WGI), performed in arenas with only the color guard section. Although color guard has been embedded in American culture since the late 1930s, there continue to be exciting innovations being made today. The possibilities of color guard are truly endless!
